The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 drama movie by Frank Darabont. The movie follows two main characters; Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) and Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman) on their quest for redemption within Shawshank State Prison.

Cast

Based on the Stephen King novella "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption" and directed by Frank Darabont. Shawshank Redemption starred Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. This was Frank Darabonts first major title and it was nominated for an array of awards including a Golden globe for best screenplay.

Plot Summary

The story follows Andy Dufresne who is sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife and her lover. After being sentenced to two life sentences at Shawshank State Prison Andy quickly becomes friends with "Red", a fellow inmate. Andy finds out that Red has connections and is the man 'to get things' Andy first asks Red for a rock hammer, which later is the key tool for his escape. Whilst nobody believes that escaping Shawshank is possible, Andy is determined to find a way.


Production Value

With a budget of $25millionUSD, The Shawshank Redemption went to make $58.3millionUSD at the box office. This was widely regarded as a poor return at the box office. Regardless of the poor return, The Shawshank Redemption was met with generally positive reviews. Filmed at Ohio State Reformatory, the movie looks fantastic and as a viewer, you really feel part of the experience.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the better movies that I have seen. However the main character, Andy Dufresne, can at times become uninteresting and this detracts from the overall movie experience
