The Giver (2014) Review

Author: Mitch Babbs

The Giver (2014)

A sci-fi drama that is renown for depicting the good and bad of the modern world and society. Set in the future The Giver (2014) depicts a utopian society that restricts and forbids the citizens from understanding their true roots and where they came from. It depicts a corrupt government which creates chaos and angst for the young protagonist. Due to the multi-faceted story line, this film can be viewed as a romance, Sci-fi, drama, adventure and action movie depending on how the audience perceives it.

Cast

Directed by Philip Noyce and written by Michael Mitnick and Robert Weide. The acting cast consists of Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift, Brenton Thwaites, Alexander Skarsgard, Odeya Rush, and Cameron Monaghan. These A-List actors and big names assist the writers to display a meaningful and gripping film.

Plot Summary

Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) lives in a seemingly idyllic world of conformity and contentment, When he begins to spend time with The Giver (Jeff Bridges), an old man who is the sole keeper of the community's memories, Jonas discovers the dangerous truths of his community's secret past and the past of the world. Armed with the power of knowledge, Jonas realises that he must escape from their world to protect himself and those he loves, a mission no Giver has successfully done before. The depiction that there can never be a utopian society, the secrets and reasons that the 'society' is 'utopian' will come to light.

Production Value

The budget for the film was $25 million USD, with it's release it made $67 million in Box office which totally doesn't do the movie justice as the film is fantastic.

Star Value

★★★★☆
I give The Giver (2014) a 4 out of 5, although the movie is a personally favourite of mine, I can't help but notice some things they could've enhanced the focus on modern world problems and the final overall product comes across to the viewer as rushed.
